The arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which was successfully applied in Wuhan, China, has given a boost to Malaysia’s frontline capabilities in fighting COVID-19. On Friday morning, the system that aids in improving diagnostic detection in two COVID Special Hospitals in Wuhan was installed at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The good news was shared exclusively by Eduardo Gonzalez, Vice President of the company behind the technology, Skymind Neurobionix, during the AWANI Agenda talk show on Friday night. In Wuhan, Huo Shen Shan Hospital and Lei Shen Shan Hospital are capable of analyzing computed tomography (CT) scan imaging in just 10 seconds. This system, branded as Axial AI, has been successful not only due to faster diagnostics but also because of more efficient critical resource management.

“What is interesting about this system is that it is not like a cloud-based system. We have managed to directly install the server system at the Neurobionix Malaysia lab and set it up this morning (Friday),” he said.

“I am at Kuala Lumpur Hospital to ensure that doctors know how to use it and how it can be integrated into future diagnostic tests.

“It is very exciting because for the first time it has been brought out of China, even though it took three years to develop in the lab in that country,” he added.

He believes that this system can be easily adapted to the needs of the local ecosystem. The challenge is to ensure that data, broadband access, and data network issues, including data sharing rights, do not hinder the potential of this Industry 4.0 technology in Malaysia.
